In this tutorial you will learn how to use conditional formatting in Excel.

Conditional formatting allows you to change the formatting (color, font, symbols) if its value meets a certain condition (greater than, less than a certain amount, and etc.).

As the example, let’s say I wanted a range of cells to light up red when they exceed a value of $60. We will go through the steps to use conditional formatting in Excel.

Select the range of cells you want to be conditional.
Open the Conditional Formatting drop-down at the top under the Home tab and click New Rule.
Click Use a formula to determine which cells to format.
Type in the formula. In this example my first cell starts at C5, replace that with a cell in your selection range: C5-60.
Click the Format button in the same window to change the formatting.
In this case I changed the Font color to White and the Fill color to Red.
Click OK and OK to close the dialog boxes.

Conditional formatting has endless possibilities, we’ve only shown you one to get you started.

Which features of Excel do you use? Please let us know in comments.
