Your smartphone can detect gestures such as shaking, tilting and changes in orientation. This tells us that there is some sensor in your device that can tell us this.
However, it may not be immediately clear that there are in fact *two* sensors that work in tandem to provide good data about this! These are the accelerometer and gyroscope, and their roles, while overlapping are different!
NOTE: I did not mention the compass in your device, but that's another sensor that helps out in this process as well!
