In this weeks video, we will take a look at the recent Instagram API changes and how this has highlighted the danger of relying on a single channel!

Michelle (https://www.linkedin.com/in/michelemaxinedebruyn/) was recently asked to add the Instagram API to one of her client’s websites.

Whilst searching the documentation to find a solution for her client she came across a source that stated the Instagram API had been taken down...

The interesting part of this discovery was not only the fact that it was going to be taken down but the discussion that followed.

Among the comments, there was one in particular that caught her eye.

A developer had built projects that depend entirely on the existence of Instagram’s APIs...

“Are you guys really deprecating the Public Content function?!? I mean, we’ve got clients who spent lots of time and money developing an application that uses that. Are you telling me they wasted their time and money?”

This is a classic case of a single point of failure: when something is so reliant on one source, that if you take away a single factor, it all falls apart.

Marketers often depend too much on single channel making them vulnerable to situations like these.

What if Google, Facebook, Instagram or email clients decide to change the rules?
