Cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) nursing: how to calculate cerebral perfusion pressure with the formula CPP = MAP - ICP

What is cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP)? It’s the amount of pressure required to move sufficient amounts of blood to the brain to maintain cerebral blood flow (CBV).

A normal cerebral perfusion pressure is 60 to 100 mmHg. If CPP is less than 60 mmHg the brain can experience ischemia, which can lead to brain injury or death.

To calculate for cerebral perfusion pressure, you must know the patient's blood pressure and intracranial pressure (ICP) reading. A normal intracranial pressure reading is 5 to 15 mmHg.

To begin calculating for the CPP, you must first calculate the mean arterial pressure (MAP). The mean arterial pressure is the amount of pressure present in the arteries during one cardiac cycle. A normal MAP is 70 to 100 mmHg. The formula to solve for the mean arterial pressure is MAP = 2(Diastolic blood pressure) + Systolic blood pressure divided by 3.

After this you will take the MAP and subtract it from the ICP, and this will equal the cerebral perfusion pressure.
