Impetigo pediatric nursing NCLEX lecture on interventions, treatment, symptoms, and causes with pictures.

What is impetigo?

It is a skin infection that is highly CONTAGIOUS!!!

It tends to affect children ages 2-6, but it can affect adults as well. It is most common during the summer months, especially with school-aged kids. The reason why is because kids tend to be more active with play (meaning they bump and scrap their skin more than adults) and are in close proximity to each other to spread the bacteria around.

Impetigo tends to be found on:
-most commonly found the face (mouth or nasal area)
-but it can also be found on the hands, arms, legs

How it happens? A child experiences a slight trauma to an area on the skin (may be a simple cut, crack or scratch or allergic reaction on the skin from contact dermatitis). A bacteria enters this area and causes impetigo.

What bacteria are the most common cause of impetigo? Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes

Signs and Symptoms of Impetigo:

It will appear as a red itchy blister or bump that will leak and form a honey yellow crust. It can easily spread to other areas of the body and to others. In addition, it doesn't easily heal.

Nursing interventions for impetigo include: prevention of spread the condition (parent and child education), administering treatment (topical or oral antibiotics), monitor for glomerulonephritis etc.
