What is the longest vein? The great saphenous vein is the longest vein in the human body. In this video, you can see this vein running down my husband's leg (vein check).

What do veins do? Veins return de-oxygenated blood back to the heart. The great saphenous vein runs from the dorsum of the foot, up through the leg, through the thigh, and then into the groin region, where it empties into the femoral vein.

In most people, you won't see this vein easily. However, my husband has low body fat and amazing, visible veins. As a nurse, I'd love to stick this vein, but in practice, we rarely use leg veins for blood draws or IVs, and instead, we tend to use the forearm or hand.
