Every time you talk to someone face to face, you also use nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication consists of messages sent without words. It includes the setting of the communication (physical surroundings) and body language. The impact of any face-to-face communication is dependent on body language.

To make communication effective, make sure your body language, tone of voice, and word choice project a calm, professional demeanor. Be aware of your nonverbal communication and make sure it is consistent with your oral communication. You also want to be aware of other people’s nonverbal communication because it reveals their feelings and attitudes toward you and the communication. Listen to what people say and don’t say; read between the lines.

Remember to be positive and optimistic. Acting happy can make it so—improve your mood. When talking to people, use nonverbal communication to convey openness to messages. A harsh tone of voice or a nasty look can be more effective than words.
