When we communicate, there are barriers that can lead to miscommunications. Common barriers interfere with effective communication. They include: Perception. Semantics and jargon can be communication barriers. Consider how the receiver will perceive the message and select appropriate words and terminology.
Information overload. People have a limit on the amount of information they can understand at any given time. Send messages in a quantity that the receiver can understand. Channel selection. Some channels are more appropriate for certain messages than others. Give careful thought to selecting the most effective channel for the situation.
Noise is anything that interferes with message transmission. Stop the noise or distraction, or move to a quiet location. People don’t always pay attention and listen to the message or understand it. Question receivers and have them paraphrase the message back to you.
Great communication requires you to find ways to overcome communication barriers to help prevent communication breakdowns.
