Goal setting is a basic process that is directly or indirectly part of all major theories of work motivation. Leaders and managers widely accept goal setting as a means to improve and sustain performance. A vision, for example, is really an exalted goal. The core finding of goal theory is that individuals who are provided with specific hard goals perform better than those who are given easy, nonspecific, “do your best” goals or no goals. At the same time, however, the individuals must have sufficient ability, accept the goals, and receive feedback related to the task.
