= LESSON NOTES
The term, Emotional intelligence, was used first in 1964. Science journalist Daniel Goleman popularized it in his 1995 best-selling book Emotional Intelligence (https://geni.us/KxAZAZ8).

In 1990, Peter Salovey and John Mayer defined Emotional intelligence as:
‘the ability to monitor one's own and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior.’

They later described four proposed abilities:
• Perceiving Emotions
• Understanding Emotions
• Using Emotions
• Managing Emotions

Goleman treated Emotional Intelligence as an array of skills and characteristics that improve workplace performance and personal success. He looked at a mix of abilities and traits:
• Self-Awareness
• Self-Regulation
• Motivation
• Empathy (Emotional Awareness)
• Social Skills

Reuven Bar-On did early work on what we now call emotional intelligence. He originally referred to it as emotional and social competence, but later proposed the term EQ: Emotional Quotient, as an analog of IQ: Intelligence Quotient.

Bar-On developed the most widely-used psychometric model of emotional intelligence, the EQ-i™. This follows his 15-factor model of emotional intelligence:
1 Self-regard
2 Emotional self-awareness
3 Assertiveness/Emotional self-expression
4 Independence
5 Empathy
6 Social responsibility
7 Interpersonal relationship
8 Stress tolerance
9 Impulse control
10 Reality-testing
11 Flexibility
12 Problem-solving
13 Self-actualization
14 Optimism
15 Happiness/well-being
