= = LESSON NOTES
The key components of Social Skills are:
• Excellent communication
• Inspirational leadership
• Teamworking
• Influencing and persuading skills
• Coaching and mentoring
• Collaborating, delegating, and managing conflict
• The ability to build rapport
‘People like people who are like themselves.’
Rapport is noticing and focusing on the similarity between yourself and the other person. Build rapport by increasing the similarities and we break rapport, by introducing differences. Some of the ways we can build rapport are:
• Dressing similarly
• Finding common interests, history, perspectives
• Matching posture, speech patterns, gestures, and expressions (synchrony)
• Listening
Build Your Social Skills
==================
Make time to get to know people, to listen to them, and to value them for who they are and what they can contribute – rather than deprecating them for their shortcomings.
Build your relationship through familiarity. Speak whenever the chance arises, and if it does not, make opportunities.
Give positive feedback, support, encouragement, and praise. And seeking their ideas, opinions, and advice will make the relationship more balanced.
Be prepared to take your share of the work, the blame, and anything else you expect of others, which is difficult or unpleasant.
Through it all, remain confident, resourceful, and optimistic.
Be likeable by smiling and being courteous.
Be respectful of everyone. If their behavior or performance is not all it could be, address the issues while remaining respectful of the person.
