In this video, Keith Barker covers using the protocol analyzer Wireshark on GNS3. Because so few people know how to use the protocol analyzer for sniffing packets or figuring out what's happening on a network, it often goes unused, even though Wireshark comes native on GNS3 installations for Windows.

A protocol analyzer like Wireshark is great in live, production environments, but it might be even more valuable in a learning environment. With Wireshark set up, it's easy to test hypotheses about what's happening on a network, which protocols are being used, and what the effects are that are moving downstream. Even better, since Wireshark gives a graphical representation of each and every frame, packet and segment, you can use it to verify your own understanding of network traffic. You can analyze a network node or connection, see each element of the source, destination, and protocol to see if it makes sense. Keith demonstrates first hand how easy it is to set up and configure Wireshark and display the results of its packet sniffing.
