In this video I demonstrate how to use Excel's INDEX and MATCH functions and why you might want to use XLOOKUP and XMATCH instead.

INDEX and MATCH have historically been used to lookup to the left (as opposed to VLOOKUP which looks up to the right) and to perform a two-way lookup (a criteria for both row and column in a table).
XMATCH is probably a better option in the more recent versions of Excel - this video will show you why.

XLOOKUP is capable of performing many of the tasks (although not all) that INDEX and MATCH have been used for in the past. So in many situations you can use XLOOKUP instead.
