In any repair shop, the first instinct when confronted with a water-damaged device is to disconnect the battery immediately. This crucial step helps prevent further electronic damage to the device and increases the chances of successful repair. However, in the case of this Xiaomi Redmi 8, we discovered a situation that pushed the boundaries of our capabilities, ending up as a cautionary tale rather than a repair success story.

After removing the screws with our trusty electric screwdriver, we separated the motherboard from the device's frame. This process involves the delicate task of detaching various flexes and the coaxial cable. Subsequently, we carried out an initial visual inspection to assess the extent of the damage and to strategize our repair approach.

It was clear from the outset that the motherboard had suffered substantial corrosion damage due to the water exposure. We proceeded to remove all the metal shields to gain a more unobstructed view of the damaged components. The goal here was to ascertain the extent of the water-induced corrosion and to identify the potentially salvageable components.

Our method for removing these metal shields involved applying a temperature of around 400°C with maximum air flow, excluding the use of a nozzle. This technique allowed us to distribute the heat more evenly, minimizing the risk of overheating the motherboard. The process also involved using a number 11 scalpel to pry the shield at one corner, ensuring a safe removal.

The subsequent microscopic examination revealed a grim scenario. The water damage had severely compromised the motherboard's integrity. If only the battery had been disconnected promptly after the water incident, the device might have been salvageable. The primary purpose of sharing such instances is to emphasize the importance of immediate battery disconnection in the event of water damage.

While our team is experienced and capable, restoring a device in such a state would require a significant investment of time, with no guaranteed success. The harsh reality is that once the CPU and memory are internally damaged, the device's stored information is likely irrecoverable.

In this particular case, despite our best efforts in cleaning and testing the device, the extensive corrosion had rendered most electronic components non-functional. The device was, sadly, deemed irreparable.

This case underscores the perils of water damage and the importance of immediate and professional intervention. It's a stark reminder of how a moment's mishap can result in the loss of valuable information and the device itself. We hope that sharing this experience will help raise awareness and preventive actions against potential water damage to electronic devices.
