Coptic is an Egyptian language with closely related dialects that evolved from the ancient Egyptian language. It was historically spoken by the Copts in Roman Egypt, starting in the third century AD. However, Arabic gradually replaced it after the Muslim conquest of Egypt. Today, Coptic is primarily used in liturgical contexts within the Coptic Orthodox and Coptic Catholic Churches, alongside Modern Standard Arabic. It is spoken exclusively in Egypt and has had limited influence beyond its borders, except for some monasteries in Nubia. One significant impact of Coptic is its influence on the various dialects of Egyptian Arabic, evident in lexical, morphological, syntactical, and phonological features.

The Coptic Alphabet consists of 32 letters, and its origins can be traced to two sources. The first 25 letters are adapted from the Greek alphabet, which itself has roots in ancient Egyptian letters. The remaining 7 letters in the Coptic Alphabet are modifications of Demotic letters.
