Bresciano is an endangered language in Italy, part of the Lombard language group. It was the dominant language in the province of Brescia until the 1960s due to limited knowledge of correct Italian, which was imposed after Italy's unification in 1861. Today, Bresciano has lost much of its original vocabulary and is heavily influenced by Italian. Elderly individuals may still use some ancient vocabulary in agriculture, but younger generations mix it with Italian or do not speak it.
Brescian, originating from Celtic tribes, was influenced over time by Romans and later by Lombards. Its lexicon contains elements from Latin and Lombard, making it a unique blend in northern Italy. The province of Brescia is renowned for producing Franciacorta sparkling wine and Italian caviar. In 2017, it held the title of "European Region of Gastronomy," and in 2023, it became the "Italian Capital of Culture" alongside Bergamo.
