Limburgish is a West Germanic language distinct from Dutch and German, featuring contrastive tonality and unique phonology, grammar, and vocabulary. It boasts a written tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, with 1.2-1.5 million speakers, primarily in the Netherlands. Despite its use being more prevalent in the Netherlands than in Belgium, it's on the decline, and UNESCO categorizes Limburgish as 'vulnerable.'

Limburgish has undergone a significant sound change known as the High German consonant shift, where several consonants changed from plosive (k) to fricative (ch). Additionally, it employs a contrastive tone accent system (drag tone and push tone) to convey meaningful distinctions in the language.

Limburg is the southernmost province of the Netherlands, with Maastricht as its capital. It was established as a separate province in 1839 following the separation of Belgium from the Netherlands, a process that started in 1830. Limburg is known for its delicious strawberry pies, fruit-growing businesses, choral singing tradition, and popular sports like football, cycling, and handball.
