Waddisch", translated as "language of Wadden", which is the Low Franconian name of our town, is considered an East Bergish dialect of the Low Franconian language branch and contains features of bordering Low Saxon (Westphalian), Central Franconian (Ripuarian) and predominantly Low Franconian (Cleves Franconian; Limburgish).

Until the expansion of the Cologne archbishopry from 13th century onwards, it used to show more Low Saxon features but was to some extent influenced by the South through trade and combat. The border situation between rivaling states (Duchy of Berg to the South speaking Ripuarian influenced dialects; County of Mark to the East speaking Westphalian dialects of Low Saxon) led to the merge of a small strip of around 100 km length between both areas with mixed dialects that also preserved ancient Low Franconian features. Mutual intelligibility between Standard Dutch and East Bergish is considered higher than between East Bergish and Standard German.

Those East Bergish dialects were and are to some extent are spoken between Meiderich (part of Duisburg), Werden (part of Essen), Langenberg (part of Velbert), Barmen (part of Wuppertal), Lennep (part of Remscheid), Wipperfürth, Gummersbach and Bergneustadt.
