Information:
The modern Seoul dialect is a Central Korean dialect spoken in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The modern Seoul dialect is based on the traditional Seoul dialect, but it also has been influenced by the southern dialects including the Gyeongsang dialect and the Jeollla dialect, spoken by migrants.

One of the biggest differences between the modern Seoul dialect and the traditional Seoul dialect is their vowel system. The Seoul dialect used to have 9-10 vowels with vowel length distinction, but it now only has 7 vowels with no vowel length distinction. Unlike Middle Korean and some modern eastern dialects which have pitch accents (or tone), the Seoul dialect has very simple intonation fixed by the initial consonant of words. The traditional Seoul dialect was widely used in Seoul until the 1980s-1990s, but it has been replaced by the modern Seoul dialect from the early 1990s.

It is a common misconception that the Seoul dialect and the Standard Korean are the same. Although the Standard Korean is based on the Seoul dialect, not all features of the dialect were adopted to the standard. For example, vowel harmony rule no longer exists in the Seoul dialect while the standard still keeps it. Because of the misconception, many Seoul dialect speakers think their dialect is just a colloquial form of the standard and tend to avoid writing their dialect. One exception is that they prefer the Seoul dialect when they want to look soft and cute.

If you are interested to see your native language/dialect to be featured here. Submit your recordings to [email protected]. Looking forward to hearing from you!
