Provençal is a variety of Occitan.

Spoken in Provence and parts of Drôme and Gard in southeast France by around 200,000 people.

Historically, Provençal referred to the entire Occitan language, but now it specifically refers to the variety spoken in Provence.

It should not be confused with Franco-Provençal (Arpetan), spoken in parts of Italy, France, and Switzerland.

Provençal was used by troubadours and in literature from the 11th century.

It was also used in legal, administrative, and court documents from the 13th century.

Its official use declined in the 16th century, and it was replaced by French after the French Revolution in the late 18th century.
