Standard Moroccan Amazigh, also known as Standard Moroccan Tamazight, is a standardized language created by the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM) in Morocco. It blends elements from Tashelhit, Central Atlas Tamazight, and Tarifit, the three main Amazigh languages in Morocco. This language has held official status in Morocco since 2011.
Tamazight has been written in various scripts, including Arabic, the Berber Latin alphabet, and Tifinagh. In 2003, IRCAM selected Tifinagh, specifically Neo-Tifinagh, as the orthography for Standard Moroccan Amazigh as part of its standardization efforts. This choice was met with controversy, as it was seen as a political decision rather than a practical one. Most Moroccan Tamazight speakers do not use Tifinagh.
The Berbers in Morocco are an indigenous civilization with a history spanning over 20,000 years. Referred to as the Amazigh, which means 'Free Men,' modern-day Berbers in Morocco are descendants of various nomadic and sedentary tribes, predominantly living in rural areas, and they have endured multiple invasions throughout their history.
