Vedic Sanskrit is the ancient dialect in which the Vedas, collections of hymns composed around 3,500-2,700 years ago by Indo-Aryan immigrants, were written. These hymns remain significant in Hinduism today, preserved through oral tradition. Regional recitation styles, known as śākhās, emerged over time, leading to some distortion of the original pitch accents and poetic meter. However, ancient grammarians detailed the Vedic pitch accent system, which, when applied, restores the original recitation style. Vedic Sanskrit holds importance in Indo-European historical linguistics due to its antiquity and similarity to other ancient Indo-European languages. The speakers of Old Indo-Aryan were nomadic pastoralists who settled in Northwest India, following a polytheistic Vedic religion. Vedic Sanskrit of the Ṛgvedá and the Classical Sanskrit of the Epic Mahābhārata, differ in terms of vocabulary, syntax, accentuation, pronunciation, and the usage of archaic tenses as much as Modern English differs from Shakespearean English.
