Japanese, the main language of the Japonic family, is spoken by about 120 million people, mainly in Japan where it is the national language. The Yonaguni language, part of the Southern Ryukyuan languages, is spoken by around 400 people on Yonaguni Island in the Ryukyu Islands near Taiwan. Yonaguni is not officially recognized by the Japanese government due to its language policy.
