Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.

Special Thanks to Md Fid Firdhaus

The Salako language is classified as a malayic-dayak language located on the northwestern tip of Borneo. The Salako speakers and Kanayatn ethnic group in Western Kalimantan shares similar language and culture. This language also shares many vocabulary similarities with the Sarawakian Malay language.

The Salako people can mainly be found in Lundu-Sematan division in Malaysia, as well as around West Kalimantan province in Indonesia. In both countries, the Salako people worships Jubata who has a significant impact on their culture and way of life, as they have tradition and rituals surrounding the god. Since the 19th century, some diaspora has converted into Christianity, as well as Islam.

Nevertheless, many of those who converted is still holding on to some form of activities of their old religion due to respect for the tradition. An example would be the Basansam tradition where villagers are prohibited from leaving their home for usually 1, 3 or 7 days which is done in order to ward off misfortune to their village such as diseases and all sorts of dangers.

In Malaysia, some of Salako's famous food includes bontokng, a leaf-wrapped rice and tumpik, which is also called pinjaram in other cultures. You can also find similar dishes in other Dayak families. Many of their traditional food also is best cooked in bamboo tubes.
