Insular Indic languages (of Sri Lanka and Maldives) started developing independently and diverging from the continental Indo-Aryan languages from around 5th century BCE. It is a sub branch of the Eastern Zone of Eastern Indo-Aryan languages.

Sinhala primarily spoken by the Sinhalese people of Sri Lanka, who make up the largest ethnic group on the island, numbering about 16 million. It is written using the Sinhala script, which is one of the Brahmic scripts; a descendant of the ancient Indian Brahmi script closely related to the Grantha script.

Maldivian or Dhivehi spoken in the South Asian island country of Maldives and on Minicoy Island, Lakshadweep, union territory of India. It has around 340,000 native speakers. They use the "Thaana" script that first appeared in the written records during the 17th century.
