Luichow language (romanization of Leizhou Min, simplified Chinese: 雷州话; traditional Chinese: 雷州話), also known as "Lei language", is the common mother tongue of people from the southwestern Guangdong Province, southeastern Guangxi Province in China, as well as some overseas communities. With more than eight million native speakers in China, the language is regarded as one of the four major local languages of Guangdong Province. As a regional culture, "Luichow Culture" is listed as one of Guangdong's "Four Major Cultures".
In fact, many features of ancient Chinese retained in Luichow language. It was evolved from the ancient Quanzhang dialect brought by the Quanzhang immigrants’ community from Fujian Province. It’s wildly known that the language belongs to the Sino-Tibetan language family of Min language. It’s also combined with Hainanese in Qiong-Lei group, which shares historical linguistic roots with Min language but has ultimately developed in a distinctive language.
