'Iorana! Ko Aniti to'oku 'iŋoa. Pe hē a koe?
Hello! My name is Andy. How are you?
Let's talk about the Rapa Nui language.

Rapa Nui is an Eastern Polynesian language of the Austronesian family, spoken on Easter Island (Rapa Nui). It is isolated within Eastern Polynesian but morphologically closest to Marquesan, while its phonology resembles New Zealand Māori. Rapa Nui retains more original consonants compared to other Eastern Polynesian languages. Like all Polynesian languages, it has few consonants. Little is known about Rapa Nui before European contact, but most of its vocabulary comes from Proto–Eastern Polynesian. Extensive borrowing from Tahitian has led to dual forms for some words.

Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, is a special territory of Chile located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean at the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle. The island is renowned for its nearly 1,000 monumental statues, called moai, created by the early Rapa Nui people. In 1995, UNESCO designated Easter Island as a World Heritage Site, with much of it protected within Rapa Nui National Park. The name "Easter Island" was given by its first recorded European visitor who arrived on Easter Sunday in 1722. The Polynesian name "Rapa Nui" ("Big Rapa") was coined after slave raids in the early 1860s, due to the island's resemblance to Rapa in the Austral Islands.

Experts disagree on when Polynesians first settled Easter Island, with estimates ranging from around 800 to closer to 1200, according to a 2007 study. The island's inhabitants developed a thriving culture, evidenced by the moai statues and other artifacts. However, deforestation occurred due to land clearing and the introduction of the Polynesian rat. By the time Europeans arrived in 1722, the population was estimated at 2,000 to 3,000. Subsequent European diseases, Peruvian slave raids in the 1860s, and emigration reduced the population to 111 by 1877. Today, descendants of the original inhabitants make up about 60% of Easter Island's population, with many also living in mainland Chile. They speak Rapa Nui and Spanish. The undeciphered rongorongo script may transcribe the old Rapa Nui language. Key myths include Hotu Matu'a, the first settler, and the Birdman cult involving the god Makemake and an egg competition. Rapa Nui culture includes feather headdresses, bark cloth, wood and stone carvings, and spiritually significant tattoos and body paintings.
