According to many contemporary Brazilian linguists (Bortoni, Kato, Mattos e Silva, Perini and Bagno), Brazilian Portuguese is a highly diglossic language. This theory claims that there is an L-variant (termed "Brazilian Vernacular"), which emcompasses a variety of sociological registers that are the mother tongue of all Brazilians, and an H-variant (standard Brazilian Portuguese) acquired to varying extents through schooling, limited to the written language, and heard only when someone reads aloud a text strictly written according to the H-variant. Since there are no more any contexts in which H-Variant can be spontaneously employed and practiced orally, it is nowadays very demanding for Brazilians to master it, which has given rise to the false belief, among many Brazilians, that “the Portuguese language is very difficult” or “Portuguese is the hardest language in the world”.

L-variant represents a modified form of the language (in terms of grammar and, in the least educated registers, of phonetics) that arguably took the place of the fading Língua Geral (the colonial lingua franca, based on the Amerindian Tupi language, that was predominant even among poorer white people and Black slaves until well into the 18th century in all of Brazil), while H-variant is based on 19th century European Portuguese and imperial-age elite Brazilian Portuguese (and very similar to Standard European Portuguese, with only minor differences in spelling, vocabulary and grammar usage). Mário A. Perini, a Brazilian linguist, even compares the depth of the differences between L- and H- variants of Brazilian Portuguese with those between Standard Spanish and Standard Portuguese.

The spoken variety presented on the video represents the most educated register of the L-variety, which has been, for the last decades, as close as a Brazilian can get to employing the H-variety in spontaneous spoken language without sounding weird or pedantic even in formal contexts. It is pronounced with the so-called “neutral accent” of contemporary Brazilian Portuguese.
