Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.

Koine Greek is a form of Greek used during the Hellenistic period, Roman Empire, and early Byzantine Empire. It developed after Alexander the Great's conquests in the 4th century BC and became the common language across much of the Mediterranean and Middle East. Primarily based on Attic and Ionic Greek, it incorporated elements from other dialects due to dialect levelling.

Modern Greek, a descendant of Classical Greek, is spoken by about 13.4 million people in Greece and in Greek immigrant communities in North America, Australia, and elsewhere. Greek diglossia includes Katharevousa, a purist form influenced by Classical Greek, and Dhimotiki, the colloquial mother tongue used primarily in oral communication.

Pontic Greek is an endangered variety of Modern Greek originally from the Pontus region on the southern Black Sea, northeastern Anatolia, and the Eastern Turkish/Caucasus region. It is now mainly spoken in northern Greece. It is not completely mutually intelligible with standard Modern Greek.

Griko is the dialect of Italiot Greek spoken by the Griko people in Salento (province of Lecce), while a similar dialect, Greko, is spoken in Calabria. Griko and Standard Modern Greek are partially mutually intelligible.

Tsakonian is a highly divergent variety of Greek spoken in the Tsakonian region of the Peloponnese, Greece. It descends from Doric Greek, unlike other Greek varieties derived from Attic-Ionic. Some consider it a separate language. Tsakonian is critically endangered, with only a few hundred to a few thousand mostly elderly fluent speakers. It is not mutually intelligible with standard Modern Greek.
