The Goral dialect is an umbrella term for Lesser Polish and transitionally Lesser Polish - Silesian (Čadca dialect) dialects. This video is in the Southern Zagórzan dialect in particular. They are spoken by the Gorals, an ethnic group in South Poland, North Slovakia, and East Czechia which usually consider themselves either Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, or separate. The Gorals came to be as a distinct ethnic group around the XV century with the arrival of the Vlachs, a group of Slavic and Balkan Orthodox that mixed in with the farmer populations from Lesser Poland and, Slovakia.

Due to the isolation of Gorals, settlement of many peoples, high self-control, close proximity to many languages, and location on a major trade route, the Goral dialects absorbed many unique features. Goral has a lot of literature and is considered a microlanguage. Its literary tradition goes back to the 19th century with activists like Władysław Orkan who fought to preserve the tongue by writing down folk stories. In the II Polish Republic, Goral would be sometimes mixed with Polish to create an unofficial literary language used in media and government papers. It is still commonly spoken however it has recently had a sharp decline. In spite of this, young Gorals still tend to mix Goral pronunciations and words.
