It is one solid way to begin. The very first thing you say to kick off a presentation is called the opening or “attention grabber.”
The trouble is, statistics can often go by too quickly to genuinely gain your listeners’ attention and they don’t have the desired impact.
If you want to start with a fact or statistic, it's best to follow some tips to do it well.
1. Use a startling or interesting statistic. In the course of your presentation preparation, you will likely come across statistics and facts that stand out to you. That's a good clue that an audience might find that fact interesting as well. Set it aside and consider that statistic a good candidate for your attention grabber.
2. Cite the source for your statistic up front. Use the same approach that you would use to cite a quotation. You'd say, "As Mother Teresa once said . . ." In the same way, say "In 2016, Nielson, the company that tracks TV viewing patterns, reported that the average American . . ." The source sounds much better at the beginning.
3. Use two statistics or facts in an attention getter. If you use just one, it may go by too quickly and not do the job of actually gaining your listeners' interest.
4. Consider mixing your statistics with rhetorical questions. When you package them together, it pumps up the impact.

Don't exaggerate. Use statistics and facts fairly. If you stretch the truth (e.g., by saying "about 1/2" when the statistic is really 40%, you'll lose credibility.
