In this tutorial, we will teach you how to use the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. The illustrator pen tool is a freehand tool which can be used to make simple lines, draw different shapes and even complete sketches. In this tutorial, you will learn the basics of how to use pen tool in illustrator by following the simple steps given below which can be used to make different shapes.

Step 1-- Draw shape with straight lines
Over here, you can see that we have the pen tool panel opened up.
First, let's select the pen tool and click on the art board to place an anchor point on the canvas. By adding one anchor point after another, each point gets connected and you can draw shapes depending on the direction in which you are adding the anchor points.
In the end, click on the first anchor point again to close the path. In this tutorial, we have drawn an object in the shape of a t-shirt, using only straight lines.

Step 2 -- Move the anchor points
You can change the location of an anchor point by using the direct selection tool. So let's pick up the direct selection tool and click on the anchor point. Now you can drag the anchor point or use your arrow keys on the keyboard to move the anchor point on the canvas.

Step 3 -- add anchor points
Now let's select the "add anchor point tool" from the panel. From this tool, we can basically add points in the middle of the path. This way, we can change the shape using the direct selection tool. By adding anchor points in the middle, you can transform the art work which wouldn't be otherwise possible.

Step 4 -- Delete the points
We can also delete the unwanted points by using the "delete anchor point tool". For that, let's pick up the tool first and click on the anchor point which has to be deleted. And it's as simple as that. After that, you would notice that the anchor point will be deleted and the art work would change accordingly.

Step 5 -- Change the point to curves
The last option in the pen tool panel is the "convert anchor point" tool. You can pick up the tool and click on the anchor point to select it. After that, let's drag it in a specific direction and you will notice that the straight line would change into a curve and vice versa.

Step 6 -- Draw curves
You can also use the pen tool to draw shapes using curves. For that, select the pen tool and click on the art board to place the first anchor point. Then place another anchor point, hold the cursor and drag it to create a curve. In the same way, you can complete the shape and close the path.

Step 7 -- Move the handles
With a basic shape made, you can alter the curves by using the direct selection tool. Over here, when the handles appear on the anchor points, you can move the handles to change the shape of the curve. You can also straighten up any line using the "covert anchor point" tool.
And that's basically how you can work with the pen tool in adobe illustrator.
