Step1 -- Moving the car image to the other document
With the image of the car opened up, we will first copy the whole canvas and move to the document where the country road background image is opened up.
Over here, paste the selection by moving to the Edit menu and selecting the paste option.
Step2 -- Making a selection of the car
Now you need to make a selection of the car. Before starting, make sure the path mode is enabled. You can do that by opening up this drop down menu on top and choosing the path option.
With the pen tool, what you want to do is to trace over the image by making anchor points. You can even follow the curvature of the object by dragging the cursor and bringing out the direction handles.
You can even use the polygonal lasso tool for making a selection as well. Once the entire car has been traced, simply click on the Selection button next to the make option above. This will open up the Make Selection window. Over here, keep the feather radius to 0 and once you hit Ok, you will see that the path will become a selection.
Step 3 -- Deleting the car background
Now we will press SHIFT+CTRL+I to inverse the selection. Pressing the delete button now will remove the background of the car image.
Now you can use the move tool to change the position of the car and the transform tool (activated by CTRL+T) to resize the image according to the background.
Step 4 -- Blending the car image with the background
Let's blend the image with the background by picking up the pen tool.
We will use the tool to trace out the windows in the image.
After doing that, you can make a selection of the path and simply delete the selection.
Step 5 -- Bringing the tortoise image on the canvas
Let's continue combining images in Photoshop by opening up the image of a turtle. While moving the image, if you get a paste profile mismatch error, you can ignore that.
Once the image is brought to the document, press the CTRL T key and resize the image. Once done, do remember to right click on the image and flip it horizontally.
Step 6 -- Tracing out the tortoise
Now use the pen tool to carefully create an outline around the turtle.
Convert the path into a selection by clicking on the selection button next to the make option. Keep the feather option to 0 for the selection. Do remember to press SHIFT+CTRL+I to inverse the selection and hit delete to remove the background.
Step 7 -- Skewing the tortoise image
After that, you need to duplicate the tortoise layer. With that done, hide the original layer for now. After that, press CTRL+T to activate the transform tool and first resize the image a bit and position it properly on the car behind.
Next, hold the CTRL key while the transform tool is activated. Now while dragging any of the handles, the corners will be distorted and skewed independently.
Step 8 -- Removing portions from the tortoise image
With that done, add a layer mask and reduce the opacity of the layer so that the car becomes visible. After that, pick up the brush tool with the soft default brush selected and using black color for the fill, apply the brush on the parts of the image need to be removed. Remove all the extra parts of the turtle's body such that only the shell remains.
After that, right click on the layer mask and click on the "Apply layer mask" option.
Step 9 -- Using the warp tool
Next, press the CTRL T key to enable the free transform tool. With that done, right click and select the warp option.
Now let's move the bottom 2 edges inwards, in this case, towards the right to shape up the shell.
Step 10 -- Removing the whole body except the tortoise head
Next, from the layer panel, let's move the hidden layer to the top and unhide it. On this layer, remove the whole body except the head. So first, let's position the image accordingly and increase the size of the image a bit.
Now let's add a layer mask and pick up the brush tool. Make sure you have a soft brush selected and the hardness is set to 0%. With black color selected for the fill, start applying the brush over the parts of the image you want to remove, which in this case would be the whole body except the head.
The rest of the lesson is explained in this video.
