Adobe Photoshop is a powerful design tool which can be manipulate and create interesting illustrative graphics. One of the most interesting effect is the posterize effect in Photoshop. You can use this effect to manipulate your own photo and convert it into a comic look. There are many ways to apply this effect on an image but in this tutorial you will learn how to use poster edge filter to create interesting posterize effect.
Fellow the steps given below to learn how to posterize a picture using Adobe Photoshop.
Step 1 -- Apply the filter
For this tutorial, we will be working on a portrait. Let's start by first duplicating the background layer.
Now let's open up the "Filter" menu, move to "artistic" and select the "poster edge" option from the list.
Step 2 -- Adjust the settings
This filter will basically decrease the number of colors in an image according to the settings we keep. For example, we will adjust the "edge thickness" to 2, "edge intensity" to 0 and "posterization" to 1. This setting will vary from image to image. Notice how the image is reduced to simple shading and basic colors only.
Step 3 -- Apply cut out filter
In next step, let's duplicate this layer. With that done, let's open up the filter menu once more, move to artistic and this time, we will select the cut out option. With this filter, the image will look like a colored, high contrast silhouette.
Step 4 -- Set the options
Over here, we will adjust the "number of level" to 7, "edge simplicity "to 1 and "edge fidelity" to 1. You can vary the sliders according to your image. If you want a more basic composition, you can play around with these options over here.
Step 5 -- Blend the layers
In the end, let's select the "cut out" layer and set the opacity to 39%.
At the end, you would have something like this on your canvas.
