In this tutorial, you will learn how to sharpen a picture using Adobe Photoshop. If you have an image that is too blurred to be used in album or displayed on a social networking site then this is a very useful and simple technique which can be used to restore those images or can be used to give new life to dull and boring images. To sharpen in Photoshop, we will be making the subject of the photo sharper using filters. Follow the simple steps in the following tutorial to make the image sharper.
Step 1 -- Apply sharpen filter
For this tutorial, we have opened up a blur image that needs to be sharpened in photoshop.
We will first start by duplicating the background layer. After that, let's open up the Filter menu, move to the Sharpen and click on the "unsharp mask" option.
Step 2 -- Increase the contrast
This particular option increases the contrast of the image along the edges and sharpens it. The filter itself cannot detect the edges of the image. Instead, we will be required to adjust the threshold so that it can locate the pixels that differ from the surrounding pixels.
The amount filter allows you to enter the value of the contrast of pixels. The radius filter on the other hand represents the number of pixels that are present around the edge, which can affect the sharpening. If we increase the radius, the edge effects become wider.
Its important to remember that the values are different for each image. Play around with the values and see what works for your image. For this particular tutorial, we have adjusted the "amount" bar to 94%, "radius" bar to 21.0 pixels and "threshold" bar to 0.
Step 3 -- Clear the grainy skin
Once done, you can see that the picture has sharp edges but the face skin looks a bit grainy. You can add further tweaks to the image as well.
For example, to smooth the skin, we will create a mask layer. With that done, we will select the brush tool, set its opacity to 62% and use it over the face skin. Remember not to use the brush tool over the eyes and lips.
Now you can see the difference yourself.
And that's basically how to sharpen a picture using Adobe Photoshop.
