In this tutorial, you will learn Ghosting an Image with Photoshop.

Let’s start with a photo portrait and turn it into a ghost sighting photo!

Open the image and duplicate a layer by pressing CMD+OPT+J so we always have a backup layer. Name the layer Desaturated and click ok. Next, let’s desaturate the new layer by pressing CMD+SHIFT+U. Create a copy of desaturated layer and call it Motion Blur. Again, press CMD+OPT+J to do this.

Here go to Filter - Blur - Motion Blur. Here tweak the settings to your desired value and click ok. Now, to blend this with the original image, create a new Layer Mask and paint black over the parts of the image that you want to disappear. Make sure you have the layer mask select and use a soft brush to blend things without leaving a visible edge. Set the brush opacity to 10% to make subtle changes. We’ll paint black over the main facial features of our subject.

Finally, we can add some more glow and green tint to finish up our ghostly look on the image. To do this, let’s select all the layers we worked on and then press CMD+SHIT+OPT+E. This will create a new image layer with the selected layers merged together. Go to Filter - Distort - Diffuse Glow and set your settings similar to ours.

To add the tint, click on New Fill or Adjustment Layer and Choose Solid Color. Pick the color that you want to appear. Change the blending mode to Color and dial down the opacity to somewhere around 10-20%.

That’s it! It may seem like a lot of steps, but it’s actually very simple and can help a lot of beginners familiarize themselves with Photoshop.
