In this tutorial, you will learn How to Add Light Effects to Objects in Photoshop.

The Lighting Effects filter lets you produce myriad lighting effects on RGB images.

The lighting effect is applied to any layer that you have selected. It’s a render effect thus is rasterized. It’s good to always keep a duplicate of the layer in case you want to go back to original.

Choose Filter - Render - Lighting Effects.

Here you have a myriad of options. On the top left, you have presets to familiarize yourself with how thing work. We’re gonna cover the general controls and what is what instead, but feel free to experiment with presets on your own!

Generally, each light will have some type of transform and light controls. We’ll start with Spot light. It works like a light coming from a flashlight. You can move it around, rotate it and scale it. To access additional settings, use the parameters on the right side. We’ll add some intensity, adjust glossiness and ambience.

Below, you have your lights list. You can add new lists by selecting either of the three from the top bar next to Lights. You can also delete lights by selecting them and clicking on the trashcan icon.

Click ok and you’ll have everything applied to the layer.

Lighting effect can seriously add up to the production value of your image whether it’s digital art, composition, certain type of photography or any other form of photoshop artwork.
