In this tutorial, you will learn How to Create a Paint Splatter Effect.

For this, we’ll be using separate layers that can be either photo or text.

Convert any of the subject layers to smart objects to make this a non-destructive workflow. From here, create a duplicate of the layer as a backup. Hide the layer for the backup. Select the active layer and go to Filter - Liquify.

We’ll be using the forward warp tool. Let’s first turn off Show Backdrop under View Options. This will help you see the result of each stroke.

Next adjust your brush size and start dragging the image outwards. When done, press ok. Now let’s add a layer mask and invert it by pressing CMD+I. This will hide the layer. Now we’ll use splatter brushes to paint white over the mask layer. Remember, the way layer masks work is as follows: White color makes the part of the image 100% visible and black color makes it 0% visible. Thus painting white splatters over the mask, will reveal the parts of the image.

Install the brushes that we’ve provided under this video. See our detailed tutorial on how to install custom brushes if needed.

Using the brushes paint over the black layer mask. To take this up a notch, you can use the original image and add a white layer mask, then draw some black color splatters to hide certain parts of the subject and make the color splatter complete.

Another addition that you can do is add a vibrance effect to the splatter layer from Image - Adjustment - Vibrance. Dial both sliders all the way to the right!

That’s our approach to making a paint splatter with any image that you have!
