In this tutorial, you will learn How to Create a Retro Pin-Up Poster in Photoshop.

We all remember the vintage pin-up posters from yester-year. Even if were born in the 21st century, you’ve still come along with some vintage posters in one shape or another. These are quite trendy these days and so here’s a tutorial on how to get your personal pin-up poster in Photoshop.

We’ll start with an already clipped photo of a person. It’s important to only have the subject with transparent background.

We’ll duplicate the image and right click on its layer and choose Convert to Smart Object. This will allow non-destructive addition of effects.

First, let’s add shadows and highlights adjustments. Set it close to what we have to flatten the highlights. Next let’s add contrast! Let’s now remove some of the details by going to Filter - Blur - Surface Blur. Again try to match our settings.

Now we’ll have to make the photo look like a painting. Go to Filter - Stylize - Oil Paint. Replicate the same settings as we have but as per usual, feel free to experiment from here. You can always go back to editing the settings, by double clicking the filter names under your smart object layer. Let’s add another surface blur to make it look like a painting even more.

From here on, let’s go to Image - Adjustments - Shadow and Highlights and open up the advanced settings. Once we got the image looking like a vintage drawing click ok.

We’ll continue adding some more filters to enhance the look even more! Let’s go to filter gallery and add dry brush.

Now let’s double click the settings icon next to the filter gallery and change the blending mode to Soft Light with about 40% opacity.

Let’s add another filter gallery effect but this time select cutout effect. Let’s change this filter’s blending mode to Soft Light and 50% opacity.

This should yield a great looking vintage drawing effect.

Let’s finish up the look, by bringing in a vintage paper texture. From here on, you can continue adding additional elements, vintage text and so on to finish up your Pin-up poster!
