A puppy training tutorial on how to teach your puppy his name.

I suggest your dog’s name should mean to give you attention but not necessarily come toward you. So you can say your dog’s name to get their attention if they are distracted with something, then tell them what you want them to do. For example “Fluffy, leave it” or “Fluffy, come”. You don’t need to say your dog’s name before you ask your dog to do something if you already have their attention though. And as you can imagine it can get quite repetitive.

IF your puppy or dog doesn’t look at you when you say his name after training, it tells you something. That he is too distracted, you haven’t conditioned the name enough, you haven’t proofed it enough, the dog is stressed or the reinforcement isn’t of high enough value. Do not keep repeating your dog’s name if he doesn’t look at you. Instead try to move to a less distracting environment.

Can you change your dog’s name? Yes. It is very simple to change a dog’s name. Most likely you will call your dog many nicknames as you might with close friends and family members. My dogs all have quite a few names they respond to. Splash is also called Bubu and Tug is called many names including Mr. Snuffles.

If you have adopted a dog with an unknown history, and you are worried their name was paired with punishment more than positive experiences, for example, “FLUFFY! NO!”, “BAD FLUFFY” or “Fluffy you get here RIGHT NOW! Or else.” I suggest to change the name to something that sounds completely different. This is not confusing for the dog, in the same way it’s not confusing if your mom calls you one name, but your best friend or partner calls you another name.
