A FULL TUTORIAL on how to train a dog to lay upside down for grooming can be found here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EITYvqs32Hg&t=342s
Not ALL dogs like being upside down like this, so grooming standing up is another option. But I do suggest you slowly work on teaching the dog to trust you when upside down for other grooming or health care emergencies. Also make sure to never have a dog lay on their back after drinking a lot of water or eating a meal- sometimes this can cause the stomach to twist which is a very dangerous condition. I like this way of grooming because I can see the nails better, and the dog can tell me to stop, by lifting his head.
Here Splash is lifting her head to tell me I am a "Dork" and by putting her head down shes telling me to get back to work so she can earn more treats.
Happy Training!
Don't be discouraged if your dog is not a fan of having his nails done. It is extremely common that dogs dislike their nails being cut and also not an easy or quick process to work on it. However because it has to be done, its a good idea to take the time to make it a more pleasant experience for the dog, so that every time you trim your dog's nails you aren't compromising your relationship. Some dogs who have sensitive feet or arthritis like my terrier, need constant training so that they can put up with the discomfort of having the job done. If your dog is scared having his feet touched or you simply dont know what would happen if you touch his feet, its best to get a trainer who uses no forms of intimidation to come and help you at the beginning of the training process to know how to break the steps up small enough for your dog and when it is the right time to move on to the next step. You can also search for articles and videos on using sand paper glued to a board, that you then teach your dog to scratch and sand his own nails as you work on teaching your dog to have his nails done.
