From mild and severe arthritis, to sports injuries and harsh work environments, subchondral fracturing is common. In short, the impact causes a collapse of the bone underneath the cartilage - the very structure that keeps the cartilage alive. Most of these patients initially tell us about swelling and aching at night as well as stiffness in the morning that requires the ankle "time to warm up".

Treatment varies from oral anti-inflammatories and temporary cortisone injections to ankle arthroscopic procedures, and usage of new biologics (such as bone marrow 'stem cell' treatment - video linked below). There are ankle replacement and ankle fusion procedures as well, but they are performed when no all other treatments have failed.

The front portion of this patient's ankle had extensive damage with cartilage detachment and the subchondral bone fracturing described. The calcium phosphate or 'liquid bone' used is the same organic molecule that our body produces. The applicator is simple and injecting this product into the area of damage has proven to grow healthy bone that supports cartilage.
