This patient had a particular impaction fracture of the fifth metatarsal from an ankle inversion sprain while playing basketball. More common is a fifth metatarsal base fracture (Jones Fracture) from the stress on this bone from the peroneal tendon, but the type of direct impact on the side of his foot created a comminuted (more than one break) fracture of the metatarsal diaphysis.

After repairing the ankle ligaments, the decision was made to use a plate and screws to hold the fracture fragments inline and make the fixation more stable. The Medline system was chosen for it's quality and fit for the procedure. After reduction of the fracture fragments and reinstatement of the metatarsal length, normal anatomy, and confirmation on fluoroscopy the patient was closed and put into a temporary cast. He will remain non weight bearing for 6-8 weeks and then return to a walking boot.

With some minor rehabilitation and strengthening, he should be able to return to all activities, including basketball, in 10-12 weeks.
