What is a Bunionette aka a Tailor's Bunion?

Like the classic Bunion at the first big toe joint, the tailor's bunion involves another joint or more particular, the fifth metatarsal head located at the outside of the forefoot. The bunionette causes foot pain by either the nerves pressing against the outside of the foot against the inside of a tight shoe, erosion of the cartilage or build up of callus.

The name 'tailor's bunion' is from the days before the sewing machine when tailors would sit for hours in a seated position on the floor with their legs crossed and outsides of their feet pressed against their shoes and the floor. Some people also have a genetic enlargement of the metatarsal head as well as the entire bone leaning outward to complicate matters.

Besides the lack of shoes or shoes with more room in this area, conservative treatment is limited and surgical treatment is best for a permanent 'fix' http://youtu.be/ShVat-LWsEI
