Removing an ingrown toenail, infected or not, can be done easily with both a pain-free and cosmetically improved result.

The removal of the toenail is not excessive or the entire nail, but only the part of the nail in the corner and underneath the skin. This is done under local anesthesia in our office.

In reality, the nail becomes a foreign body (like any splinter or piece of glass in the foot) if it punctures the nail groove, thus creating the infected, draining corner. The non infected, chronic ingrown nails will create a callus in the corner of the toenail from the pressure of the nail edge and pressure from shoes. Instead of the 'bathroom surgery' or multiple visits to the pedicurist, the edge can be removed and nail root in the corner treated with a chemical (Phenol) to prevent it's return.

The healing time is about 2 weeks and there are no activity or shoe restrictions after the procedure.
