The classic Hammertoe ('bent and crooked' toe) can be due to either being pushed back by the end of a shoe or a muscle imbalance in the foot. Along with the unattractive shape, a 'corn' can form on the top of the toe due to pressure and friction inside of a shoe.
Conservative options include bigger shoes, toe separators or silicon covers, but a simple surgical correction is the most popular option.
In the past, pins or 'K-wires' would exit the tips of the toes and be removed 2-4 weeks after surgery in the office. Now there are several options including this absorbable pin that does not require removal nor will it break like other devices (metal, bone, plastic).
