WHAT IS UPPER TRAPS PAIN?
Your “trapezius” is a large muscle in your back that goes from the base of your skull to the tips of both shoulders and then down to the middle of your back. The “upper traps” or upper area of this muscle is from the base of your skull to the tip of your shoulders and is a common place for tightness, tension, pain, and muscle knots.
WHY DO I GET PAIN IN MY UPPER TRAPS?
There are many things that can cause tension and pain in your upper traps. The most-common causes I encounter in my physical therapy clinic include working a desk job (often with poor posture), stress (especially if you “carry stress” in this area), and accident or injury (sprain or strain).
HOW TO FIX PAIN IN UPPER TRAPS
The right stretches and exercises can work wonders in helping to alleviate tension and pain in this area, but oftentimes this relief is only temporary if the actual cause of the pain still persists. The best treatment is to regularly perform stretches to alleviate tension in your neck and upper shoulders, perform strengthening exercises to your lower traps and postural muscles, and eliminate the source of the pain (fix your posture, eliminate stress, etc).
