"Supraventricular tachycardia is an arrhythmia which occurs above the ventricles. Examples of SVT include Atrial tachycardia, Atrial flutter, Atrial Fibrillation and AVRT and AVNRT. AVNRT is the classic SVT and is a result of abnormal/unsynchronised electrical transmission from the AV node to the ventricles.

Normally conduction from the right atrium to ventricles occurs over a singular AV nodal pathway, with no route of re-entry back into the atrium. AVNRT as the name suggest is an tachyarrhythmia caused by a reentry circuit in the AV node.

In AVNRT there are two AV nodal pathways. Patients can have two AV nodal pathway and be fine, however some people have a slow and fast conducting AV nodal pathway. The differences in the slow and fast conduction pathways can trigger AVNRT."
