WHAT CAUSES HAIR FALL AND LOSS:
There are many things that cause hair loss, and a certain amount daily is actually natural and normal. We all lose hair as our body regrows new ones, we also lose hair when we wash it, brush it, or comb it. Its normal for a certain amount of hair to fall out. In fact, its thought that we lose about 50 to 100 hairs a day without even noticing.

Some common causes of temporary hair loss include stress, illness, poor hair care, vitamin deficiencies, cancer treatment and scalp infections. Some common causes of more permanent hair loss include increasing age, hormonal imbalances, polycystic ovary syndrome, and hereditary hair loss, also known as male or female pattern baldness.

Now, for some of these conditions, you may need to speak to a specialist for medical treatments that can help.

SPECIALIST TREATMENT:
Now, sometimes even with the best hair care and diet, hair loss can still be a problem. This can be particularly the case if the cause is an underlying illness or due to a genetic condition known as male/female pattern baldness.

In these scenarios, you may need more specialised treatments to help with hair loss. Pattern baldness can affect anyone of any age, but in women, it's more common after menopause, and in men, it’s believed half of all Caucasian men may experience it by the age of 50.

Pattern baldness presents differently in men and women, with men experiencing it often as first a receding hairline and then the top of the head being affected. Whereas, in women, the front hairline isn’t as often lost. It’s usually the overall hair that thins, especially on the crown.

Now, the good news is, that there are no physical health symptoms associated with male or female pattern baldness, but saying that, it still has the potential to cause psychological distress, resulting in low self-esteem, depression and anxiety in some people. As a result, if you feel you are affected in this way, make sure you speak to your healthcare professional for advice.

Specialist treatments for pattern baldness can include a liquid known as Minoxidil, which is applied to the scalp. It’s licensed in the UK at a strength of 2% for women, and 5% for men. It usually takes at least six months to notice any improvement and the first two to eight weeks of use can actually initially cause hair loss. The hair that grows also tends to be finer than the original hair, and it doesn’t work for everyone.

Sadly, there is no cure for pattern baldness and medical treatments like Minoxidil, Finasteride and others only help for as long as you are using it. Once you discontinue, the benefit also stops.

But, there are many non-medical options out there too. To many people, hair extensions, wigs, skin camouflage makeup and hair fibre sprays are great ways to address hair loss without the side-effects of drug treatment.
