WHAT CAUSES A HANGOVER:
So how is a hangover caused? Drinking alcohol is obviously the cause but the actual mechanism of why it causes a hangover is unknown, making it difficult to effectively prevent or treat. Here are the main thought processes of how alcohol causes a hangover,
Reason number one - alcohol suppresses the hormone vasopressin and acts as a diuretic and meaning we pass more urine becoming dehydrated. It is thought this dehydration is responsible for many of your symptoms including headache and fatigue.
Reason number two - Ethanol is converted by the liver into the chemical acetylaldehyde which is a toxic chemical to the body and can be attributed to headache and nausea. The conversion of alcohol into this compound takes time, and hence the effect the next morning.
Cause number three - Your body processing the alcohol it has consumed will take a lot of energy and vitamins. This will often result in hypoglycemia or low blood sugar the following morning and high vitamin loss through the excess of urine produced, causing headache and fatigue.
WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION :
Whether you are male or female, drink in moderation and split up the recommended 14 units per week over at least 3 days per week. Try to have an alcohol-free day in between the days that you drink to allow your liver to fully clear the alcohol from your body on those rest days. Now the number of units will differ depending on the volume and concentration of the alcohol. Here’s a good unit calculator: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/alcohol-misuse/
Now, all of us have different drinking habits and sometimes drinking alcohol can negatively affect our lives. So I’ve also found a free online tool you can use if you’re worried about your alcohol intake. It’s called an “AUDIT test” and it can help you decide if it’s time to see a doctor about your relationship with alcohol - https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/684823/Alcohol_use_disorders_identification_test__AUDIT_.pdf
Don’t be afraid to seek help. Sometimes alcohol can become a problem and start to affect your personal life, work commitments, and relationships. If you ever feel that you or someone you know is being affected by drinking, speak to a healthcare professional.
